FREE GRID JOB FAIR POST

Here’s a post to answer the burning question that you’ve all been waiting for: what do your characters DO all day?? Or, to be more precise: YAY FREE GRID JOB FAIR!

This will be the place to post details about your character’s job, how it brings them into contact with other characters, and whether other characters can work there too. Use it to develop CR and come up with reasons for your characters to interact!

First of all, the context: how does work actually work on the Grid?

Departments
: Tron City has a number of central departments which administer to the entire Grid. The three we know about from extra info in Evolution are Administration, Utilities, and Security. These departments in particular are the ones officially responsible for the maintenance, upkeep, and safety of the Grid. Other cities have their own local branches of these departments, but all the paperwork goes back to Tron City eventually. Below, the three departments are further defined so characters can affiliate with them. Characters can also be independent, working for other programs, running their own businesses, or not doing anything definable as ‘work’ at all.

Work schedule: If your character has a System job, they will usually run a daily eight- to twelve-hour shift there (one millicycle or over), with twelve to sixteen hours (1.5. to two millicycles) for rest and recreation. If they’re independent, they can make their own hours (or those set by whoever they’re working for).

Salary: Do Grid workers get paid? Well… it’s complicated. Now that the Grid has near-unlimited power to draw on (via the Portal), Administration is able to provide inhabitants with a basic level of free housing, energy, garb, and a small theoretical allowance of what nobody actually calls UMOE (Units of Undefined Medium of Exchange; thank you, Flynn~) to use on whatever they want. Due to this, one could live quietly on the Free Grid without doing anything at all, and many rerezzes do until they decide what else they want to do with their lives. Programs with jobs receive a greater allowance and thus have more financial clout, which, since the money is all theoretical and investments/money-markets haven’t made it to the Grid, translates directly into purchasing power and associated social clout. It’s not a perfect system, and could change in future (part of the fun of an entire world created as a social experiment, no?), but it works for now.

Rundown of the departments your character can work for in a System or other job:

Administration: basically runs the place. They make and post rules, are in charge of the other departments, decide on changes to the city architecture and layout, make policy, and respond to the local mood. They are also in charge of making sure the Grid has adequate housing and power, dispatching the appropriate Security or Utilities divisions to handle problems that aren’t already being handled by those departments, and handing out permissions for various levels of resource access and for construction and operation of independent utilities; Eckert, for example, would apply to some office in Administration if he wanted to open up a new place downtown. While they generally wouldn’t interfere in the exchange of tasks and resources among independent programs on the Grid, they need to know what’s going on in order to maintain the system, and it can generally be assumed that they do.

There is NPC discussion about creating an office for intersystem networking, diplomacy, and immigration/emigration, but since there are very few systems with anywhere near stable connections to the Free Grid, this hasn’t been done yet.

Utilities: handle maintenance all over the Grid. While there are independent operators in all of the fields mentioned here, the size of the city demands its own dedicated squads of workers for key functions. Departments in Utilities include (but are not necessarily limited to):
System Maintenance (repair and maintenance of publicly used facilities)
Medical/Recompilation (Grid-wide first-responders, public health, and clinical care)
Transportation (road/Sailer/Light-Rail upkeep, signage, maps, pilots/drivers on public transportation, licensing, liaising with Security for deployment of minor traffic cops)
Stats/Analysis (tracking power usage, traffic patterns, weather reports, population demographics, etc etc etc, and distributing analysis and recommendations to other utilities who need the information)
Records/Comms (the Archives, secure information storage and access, comm channel maintenance, messenger services, Grid-wide news and distribution of information)

Security: Your friendly neighborhood security programs are charged with responding to and investigating disturbances and disasters, keeping and enforcing the peace, quarantining (or, in the case of gridbugs, derezzing) threats to the system and the people in it, and generally defending the rights of inhabitants to safety and security on the Free Grid. All Security branches fall under the central office, headed by Anon (currently an NPC), who reports directly to the Grid’s Admin if there’s something he needs input on. A Sentry-level security program assigned to a particular branch will have several sectors to take care of; shifts are divided between regular patrols, responding to call-ins, and filling out and studying reports. The higher one gets in the Security hierarchy, the more reports and correlations there are, and the more they tend to become specialists in Grid forensics, mediation, tactics, quartermastering, and other things. Not every Security program is a combatant, though the division overwhelmingly attracts programs who enjoy a good Game. Based on the data it gathers, Security will report to Administration in case of a system threat which requires more dealing with than putting out an alert or throwing Security programs at it, or if something for which they are not directly responsible (say, the existence of too many bars too close together in Q Sector) causes ongoing problems that could be fixed by rerouting or reregulating something.

Independents: are less regulated than System workers, who (ostensibly) need to maintain their skills and reregister every so often, and have less leeway about setting their own schedules. Independents reside and work in properties (towers, flats, shops, etc) which they sublet either from Administration or from independent property managers who operate with Administration’s permission. An enterprising program can set up shop on a street corner or apply to reclaim property which isn’t currently being used. Approximately two thirds of the Grid’s inhabitants are independents, though the number fluctuates as new people are imported. Independents can be commissioned for work by the official branches or by other independents. Many independents have jobs that don’t fall under the ruberic of system upkeep, such as various researches, performance and other arts, fashions and (legal) mods (there is a licensing system for mod providers, since a bad mod can really mess a program up, so they are regulated by Administration but not directly overseen by them), purveyors of add-ons, toolmakers, athletes, volunteer patrollers, and basically everything else, not to mention people between functions, with more than one function, or with no particular chosen function.

There can be and often is cross-pollination between the various departments and/or independents.

How to use this post:

There will be four threads in this post -- one each for the three main system management departments, and one for independents. A program whose job serves more than one branch (such as a Comms program assigned to Security as a dispatcher) should go under the thread they directly work for.

*Comment once for each of your characters, under the appropriate thread (each character gets a separate comment).
*If in Utilities, put the subgroup in the subject line of your comment.
*Copy and paste the following form into your comment:

And there you have it. Fire away!
sirendotexe: (look up)

Utilities: Support Services

[personal profile] sirendotexe 2014-02-15 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Name: Tron!
Department:Utilities: Support Services
Work environment: Tron splits his work shifts between part-timing as an End of Line siren and taking private clients. His work schedule is fairly flexible, since aside from the shifts he is assigned by Eckert he schedules appointments based on client need and his own energy levels.
What my character can do for you: Sirens in Tron's system are a fun combination of geiko (artist, conversationalist, and social lubricant at parties), massage therapist, agony aunt/talk therapist, recreation coordinator, morale officer, and straight-up courtesan. Tron has served pretty much all of those roles, though he tends to draw the line at any casual interface while in the Free Grid. (Friends, however, are welcome to apply.)

Tron's chosen artistic specialty is dance, and he participates in performances and recitals with the other End of Line Sirens. While at the End of Line, his main functions are to help keep the atmosphere positive and relaxed by interacting with the guests, with the occasional break for performance. One-on-one, his activities are determined more by the reason a particular program made an appointment. He is highly skilled at program massage therapy, able to ease pain or glitches caused by bad power flow or recent massive repair.
Are they hiring over there?: Tron would be happy to have more player-character types on his client list. He does not discriminate at all against former Clu-supporters given his, uh, colorful history with that.
Any other cool details? Don't let the heels fool you. Tron can still kick the ass of an average program.
dualtrainers: (sharing a brain)

UTILITIES - Support services: game/arena trainers

[personal profile] dualtrainers 2014-02-15 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Name: Dex & Sin
Department: Utilities - Arena support services
Work environment: Training rooms at the arena (though they will do lessons elsewhere, for programs who don't like the arena)

What my character can do for you: Game (and minor combat) training. The best part is that they tailor the sessions to their client's skill level and weaknesses (more training for what they're bad at, for instance)
Are they hiring over there?: Nope (there isn't enough demand for more trainers, I don't think)

Any other cool details? They were initially intended as one program and were split at the very end of the process, what this means is that there's some sense transference between the two and they tend to finish each other's thoughts more than each other's sentences, which can be confusing at first, but doesn't usually take long to get used to.

Utilities: Records/Comms - Central Communications Tower

[personal profile] letsbebadguys 2014-02-15 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Name: Britt
Department: Records/Communications, Central Communications Tower
Job Title: Commander, head of central communications.
Britt's Personal Schedule: Out of a 3-millicycle day, Britt currently spends from 1 to 1.5 millicycles on-duty at the tower during the busiest time of the day, with an on-call status during downtime in event of emergency. His usual downtime consists of an average of 1 millicycle's rest, with remaining time spent with Kato and/or dealing with personal matters.

Work environment: The Central Comms crew has been understaffed since Team Orange's last attack and as such is often overworked. Their success seems based on their well-established internal community, made up of programs who have been together since the beginning of the Grid. They function as a close-knit family, but with so many naturally social and outgoing programs, outsiders are welcomed easily.

What my character can do for you:Britt has recently taken (un)official command of the staff at Tron City's central communications tower, ever since the last Team Orange attack. They are responsible for keeping the lines of communication and information flow open throughout the grid. Delivering system alerts, daily news reports from security and administration, and maintaining the network of public comm stations are just some of their duties. They are also capable of dispatching repair engineers and messengers to reports of broken terminals and areas that are not able to receive normal communications, or with information that is too sensitive to broadcast.

Are they hiring over there?: Of course! Most of the team thusfar are NPCs, though some have names - these are listed on Britt's account. Anyone with experience or function in communications, data-mining, multitasking and packet handling is welcome to apply - even hackers are welcome, due to the similarity in their function sets of gathering data! But keep in mind, all parties will likely be subjected to vigorous background reviews. The kind of data they handle is sensitive, and anyone with sticky fingers and a loose mouth will be handed over to security.

Any other cool details?
The comms tower hub operates and resembles a mix of a busy newsroom floor, an equally busy tv broadcast stage, and the bridge of the new Enterprise.

runsinpacks: (13)

Utilities: Medical/Recompilation

[personal profile] runsinpacks 2014-02-16 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Name: Wulf
Department: Utilities: Medical
Work environment: Wulf runs a recompilation clinic in Tron City. At least ten other medics work with him. The clinic features a quarantine wing, virus research lab, medical supply depot, and lifts to resting quarters on an upper floor for recompilers working several shifts in succession. It's well-staffed at all hours.
What my character can do for you: If you need a recompiler, Wulf's your program. He can handle injuries from missing limbs to major code destabilization, as long as he gets there in time. He and his team also make regular and emergency housecalls; that green tank tooling down the street is probably him. What he can't do is meddle with your memories; he lacks the disc access permissions for that.
Are they hiring over there?: Yes. Wulf's last five hires were rookies and slackers; he's looking for reliable programs who can be trusted to check up on patients when they're supposed to and not read a medical chart upside down.
Any other cool details? Wulf is highly task-oriented and occasionally terrible at reading people; this affects his bedside manner. But he really does want to help.
boomersecurity: (you shall not pass)

SECURITY - Neighborhood watch

[personal profile] boomersecurity 2014-02-15 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Name: Boomer
Department: Security: neighborhood watch/patrol area
Work environment: An (as yet undefined) neighborhood/residential patrol area.

What my character can do for you: Break up (small) fights, report disturbances to the main security office. Usually keeps an eye out for bugs, glitches and new arrivals. He sometimes walks (or drags) the drunks home as necessary.

Are they hiring over there?: Probably in general, though not for his particular patrol area.

Any other cool details? He has a tendency to take in strays, lost bits and the like, he usually takes them to the swarm in the park or at the edge of the outlands after he's rehabilitated them.
Also: in his prior system, he was part of a group that found, isolated and dealt with malicious hacker activity. Boomer was the one who blocked the exit, which is why he's as tall and as broad as he is.
yorisearching: (Default)

Independents: Analysis and System Diagnostics

[personal profile] yorisearching 2014-02-15 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Name: Yori

Department: Independent, though she works with everyone from time to time--including occasional trips to the Portal in times of need.

Work environment: Despite her interest in analysis, Yori isn't formally part of Stats. She tends to work from home or meet various people for consultations.

What my character can do for you: By design and by long experience, Yori is really good at finding things that are going wrong, are about to go wrong, or would be likely to go wrong. She occasionally spends time with the Stats numbers to pinpoint causes of trouble. However, she's not interested in any long-term position. The commitments she's most dedicated to are complex.

Are they hiring over there? As a sub-set of finding problems, Yori enjoys being able to make connections and locate useful and enjoyable tasks for programs to do, but no, she doesn't hire anyone on her own behalf. She will talk to people about getting you into a job if she knows what you can do.

Any other cool details? Yori loves to work with art and the aesthetics of really good design, and can often be found in a park. That's a fun kind of analysis.
1st_from_the_sea: (Alpha at Work)

INDEPENDENTS: As yet unemployed

[personal profile] 1st_from_the_sea 2014-02-15 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Name:Radia
Department:Independent, unemployed as of yet
Work environment:Has none yet, due to the aforementioned unemployed-ness.
What my character can do for you: Radia is a capable leader, skilled at negotiation, and with an almost unparalleled aptitude for multi-tasking, given the right kind of system interface. As the first ISO to emerge, she has a deep connection to the code and energy of the system, and especially to its ISO population, able to sense and read the emotions of any of them in the vicinity. She is also capable of safely channeling massive amounts of power when needed or desired.
Are they hiring over there?: At the moment? Sh needs someone to hire her. XD
Any other cool details? Thinking of maybe throwing her at Comms at some future point, as that where her skillset seems to lend itself, but open to other suggestions folks might have as to what Radia should do for a living. XD
ja307020: (glaring - helmet)

Independents: Intelligence/Counter-intelligence, Misc Security Services

[personal profile] ja307020 2014-02-15 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Name:Tron
Department:Independent, formerly co-chief of Security and still has a few ties there
Work environment: Tron can show up anywhere though he avoids the Arena complex like the plague. He sets his own hours, time primarily split between sifting bits of data that might have relevance to intel/counter-intel and making random patrols looking for potential trouble/bailing programs out. He does willingly coordinate with the security office, but refuses to be drawn back into the formal hierarchy after a bad User override that one time and has a bit of a habit of wandering off and doing his own things. Tron's primary function these days is threat detection and deletion (or, much to Tron's dismay, quarantine), particularly in terms of spotting and shutting down things that the regular security patrols would not be able to catch or handle. While Tron makes a good leader and has lots of command experience, he's currently on vehement sabbatical from being in charge of anyone outside of specific, limited emergency situations. Oh, and Tron frequently runs self-defense classes or private lessons to help non-combat programs learn how to protect themselves.
What my character can do for you: If it needs beaten up, rescued, taught how to hit things, or glowered at, Tron is your program. Have a Bad Feeling about a particular bunch of programs? Tron can investigate that. He's basically a purry program version of Batman, only his number is actually in the Grid phone book.
Are they hiring over there?: Someone very insistent and/or crazy might be able to convince Tron to take them on as an apprentice, and if he accumulates enough random apprentices they might just make an irregular security unit. Tron is also for hire as a combat instructor, but the stipulation there is no Arena.
Any other cool details? Tron needs an actual hobby or three. Someone trying to school him in one sounds awesomely hilarious.

Re: INDEPENDENTS

[personal profile] 0rca 2014-02-15 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
Name: 0rca

Department: Independent mechanic

Work environment: 0rca’s garage is relatively small. He has a divided space, one is the “shop” side where anyone can look at add-ons and schedule appointments for repairs or upgrades. In accordance with Administrations rules and regulations all upgrades and mods have to be approved before he’ll start work on any baton. The other half is dedicated to his “garage” where he works on the vehicles. It’s a redistricted area unless 0rca is present. No sense in chancing someone getting hurt!

What my character can do for you: 0rca is an expert on the baton 3 and 4 generation lightcycle models, able to repair most damage and glitches or restore the lightcycle’s original code. He can also code add-ons into the existing subroutines such as color skins, stylish circuit lines, adding a canopy option to a 4 gen cycle, etc. While not as well versed in a lightjet’s code he can still repair minor to moderate damage. 0rca can also as a mod to your baton. Want a faster lightcycle? No problem. How about more stability? Yet bet! No lightjet on that baton? 0rca can upload it! He also likes to experiment with vehicle code. He’s designed a boat (with only a few slight flaws), and given the change will tinker endlessly with those glider packs.

Are they hiring over there?: 0rca’s just starting out. But that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t welcome any help or advise! Maybe after he’s gotten his little garage off he’ll be able to officially hire other programs.

Any other cool details? None that come to mind, but if I figure something out I will update!
1st_program: (braid)

INDEPENDENTS - Translation services

[personal profile] 1st_program 2014-02-15 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Name: Thela

Department: Independent (so far)

Work environment: That fountain, the big one, in the park. She doesn't have an office or a shop-front yet, and has just been advertising in the info-hubs with her contact details.

What my character can do for you: You have something you need translated? Or a cipher that needs decoding? She can do that! She can even translate theoretical things, amps into pounds, for instance.

Are they hiring over there?: It's just her, but she wouldn't mind trying to train someone.

Any other cool details? She speaks bit! Because their flight patterns carry more information than their binary 'yes'ing and 'no'ing, and that's something she can translate as well.
dollyoftheeol: (serving drinks)

INDEPENDENTS - End of Line

[personal profile] dollyoftheeol 2014-02-15 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Name: Dolly
Department: End of Line club
Work environment: see above

What my character can do for you: Serving drinks and carrying on pleasant conversations (and occasionally getting lost on the dance floor for a few micros)
Are they hiring over there?: Ask Eckert.

Any other cool details? Dolly was the First Waitress™ so she was the prototype/template for the others - she doesn't generally wear a disc because she doesn't need one unless she's doing something where she'd need more memory storage (an off-site event for instance).
She's been around long enough that she can mix most drinks as well as serve them, but she's not officially one of the bartenders.
electrifaction: (Default)

INDEPENDENTS - End of Line

[personal profile] electrifaction 2014-02-16 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Name: Eckert
Department: Independent host and entertainer at the End of Line Club.
Work environment: The End of Line Club is the premier entertainment facility on the Free Grid (or at least Eckert says it is), boasting something for everybody. Each floor is open for two shifts a day: an evening shift, when most of the action happens, and a simulated "night" shift, with quiet music, low lights, and reduced staff; all floors are closed for the morning shift, during which cleanup, repairs and rehearsals take place. The main floor is the one we see in Legacy, and Eckert has opened two additional entertainment areas on floors below and plans to open the roof as well.
What my character can do for you: Diversions available at the End of Line include dancing, beverages, performances, and private areas for small parties. Eckert is also available for Grid-wide networking and fostering contact between programs who could use each others' backing.
Are they hiring over there?: Very yes. The End of Line is taking on staff in Security, Service, and Entertainment for its two newly opening floors, and may expand further in future. Staff usually work and live on the premises, working one shift per day (though there are exceptions to both of these conditions, particularly for part-time entertainers); for full-time staff, the club provides a fairly high standard of living. In return, Eckert demands loyalty, professionalism, and a sincere enjoyment of the service they provide to their guests. Eckert is also quietly training one or two particularly qualified programs for hosting duties to allow him more time for networking around the Grid.
Any other cool details?

letsbebadguys: (kato-white-working)

INDEPENDENTS - End of Line; Audio Entertainment Packet

[personal profile] letsbebadguys 2014-02-16 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Name: Kato, alternatively 'DJ Ikano' or 'K2'
Department: Audio Entertainment Packet (DJs and Musicians)
Job Title: DJ, emergency security/recompiler at-hand
Kato's Personal Schedule: Kato's schedule spans about 75% of the evening shift and 25% of the early night shift. It usually progresses with .4 of a millicycle of performance assisting as backup or vice-versa for another DJ, followed by a .1mc rest, and then .5mc in the upper soundbooth for his main shift. His usual downtime consists of an average of 1 millicycle's rest, with remaining time spent with Britt and/or dealing with personal matters. Due to his past experience with both, he is sometimes called upon to provide backup security or first-aid, but has re-focused his functions on music foremost.

Work environment: Taken from Eckert's tag, haha, The End of Line Club is reputed to be the premier entertainment facility on the Free Grid. The full number of the current Audio Entertainment Packet, or colloquially the music DJs, that play there are uncertain, but Kato shares his shift with two npcs, as yet unnamed (possibly. can't remember.) They've bonded at best on a shallow level through music, as Kato hasn't felt comfortable enough with his life to really open up.

What my character can do for you: Kato is always open to requests and suggestions for the theme of music during the millicycle, if you approach him on break. He has a knack for manipulating the flow of the music to best fit the emotions of the audience. If you're feeling particularly down, he can play you an uplifting song; got a lot on your processor, he can wisk you away with carefree relaxation. Feeling up to fun of any rating? He's got music for that too, and he loves trolling people with it.

Any other details?
Kato has claimed the upper soundbooth as his own, at least on an unofficial basis, as it was the only place to truly play to his best without risk of discovery over his circuits. Now that he has new gloves, he doesn't need to be up there, but it's quiet and gives him the focus he likes - plus the sound system is the best in the club, and it's got a perfect view of both the main windows and the primary dance floor.

homingpigeon: (smug)

INDEPENDENTS - Courier

[personal profile] homingpigeon 2014-02-15 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Name: Muon
Department: Independent courier services

Work environment: Here, there and everywhere - She's been advertising her services on the public information system.

What my character can do for you: Speedy, secure information transfer. She compartmentalizes any information/data she carries, so that she doesn't have direct access to it, only the recipient (someone with the data key) would be able to get it.

Are they hiring over there?: She's a loner, currently, but wouldn't mind working for a courier agency, or even the official comms department.

Any other cool details? She generally rollerblades to get to wherever she's going, but occasionally uses a bike instead, where it's faster to do so.
listeningiso: (window)

INDEPENDENTS - Architect

[personal profile] listeningiso 2014-02-15 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Name: Hollis
Department: Nothing official
Work environment: ...Wherever he happens to be (and he would happily work as an independent contractor)

What my character can do for you: On his own version of the Grid, he helped design many of the buildings in Bostrum. he hasn't had a chance (nor really a reason) to design anything on the Free Grid, but he'd definitely be interested.
Are they hiring over there?: No, no, no, you're supposed to hire him.

Any other cool details? He's good at making buildings what stay up because he listens to the structure, where airflow and energy-flow should be going for maximum stability.
He's also a bomb technician for mostly this same reason. He can build them (and back home he did, for a long while) and he can dismantle them.
overarch: (1)

INDEPENDENTS: Dancer in transition

[personal profile] overarch 2014-02-16 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Name: Allon
Department: Independent entertainer, just starting to become active again.
Work environment: Post-rerezz, has performed at the block party and on rare occasion impromptu at the End of Line, and practices solo at the Park. Still considering where to fit in.
What my character can do for you: Allon will eventually be teaching dance, as well as performing across the city. Still needs to make the connections and build up the courage for that to happen, though.
Are they hiring over there?: Anyone who wants to dance with Allon is welcome to ask; bb Arjian needs excuses to open up.~
wetherthewether: (Default)

INDEPENDENTS: Weather Algorithm

[personal profile] wetherthewether 2014-02-16 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Name: Ko
Department: Independent; liases with Stats to provide weather reports.
Work environment: To date, Ko spent most of her time patrolling the weather stations in the Outlands, keeping them operational and gathering their data for transmission back to Tron City. With most of the stations now destroyed, she will be attempting to salvage the ones that remain, submitting recommendations to Administration for ones that can still be rebuilt, and spending more time in Tron City.
What my character can do for you: She's still figuring that out. Losing most of the weather stations was a big shock.
Are they hiring over there?: When the time comes to rebuild some of the Outlands stations, she'll need mechanics and architects to handle the construction. She's also open to discussing better ways to manage the Grid's weather.
Any other cool details? Ko was a Tower Guardian in a previous unremembered life, and may grow attached to Dumont's I/O Tower.
groove_is_in_the_heart: (Practicing/Content)

INDEPENDENTS: Musician

[personal profile] groove_is_in_the_heart 2014-02-16 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Name: Cantus
Department: Independent, though he's quite willing to colaborate with others on various projects.
Work environment: Works from home when it comes to composition, but performances generally happen in public venues, such as the End of Line Club. Practices can happen wherever he won't annoy people by doing so, though it helps if the place has good acoustics.
What my character can do for you: Cantus can sing and play music- lightar is his favorite instrument, and the one he's best at, though he can play a few others too- as well as compose original pieces, and for anyone interested, can also probably try to teach them to do the same. He prefers to perform with accompaniment, but is quite willing to do lightar only pieces if wanted or needed. He's available for hire if you're looking for someone to play your party or whatever, though he doesn't currently advertise that much other than making it generally known by word of mouth that he's available. He also sometimes does impromptu performances at the EoL if the occasion presents itself and/or Eckert asks him to.
Are they hiring over there?: Cantus isn't hiring anyone on a permanent basis, but he's quite willing to seek out other programs with musical talent or programs with certain skillsets if needed for a gig or a project.
Any other cool details? Cantus can find the rhythm and song in just about anything, and can sometimes get inspired by the most seemingly random things.

isothereminist: (stage garb: upright)

INDEPENDENTS: Musician

[personal profile] isothereminist 2014-03-31 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Name: Elnoi
Department: Independent - musician and occasional greeter at the art gallery
Work environment: The gallery, the park, whatever street corner she's busking on
What my character can do for you: Entertain them, and possibly faceplant them into her cleavage.
Are they hiring over there?: Uh...
Any other cool details? She generally plays the theremin (only one with panels instead of antennae) but she can pick up most any instrument fairly quickly.
program_spark: (Default)

INDEPENDENT: Borderlands/Outlands Patrol and Monitoring

[personal profile] program_spark 2014-02-16 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Name: Spark

Department: Independent: Borderlands/Outlands Patrol and Monitoring

Work environment: Spark spends most of her time outside the city, and rarely teams up with other programs on routine patrols. Should backup be required, she has no trouble accepting and adapting to working with others, but she tends to be more comfortable on her own. That's not to say she's antisocial; encounter her during her work and depending on the circumstances, you might end up tagging along behind her so she can escort you home safely. She's not like normal security programs, though(having little interest in most games), and often has trouble fitting in.

What my character can do for you: Spark scouts and patrols the Borderlands(the area between the edges of Tron City and the barren Outlands), returning to the city periodically to report to Anon in the central offices. She has basic medic training and will help anyone who is in trouble on or near her patrol route. She escorts lost programs back to the city, and can be counted on to lend a hand if backup is needed for normal security situations. Her original mapping routines give her an advantage, and her reports will include any geographical changes that have occurred since her last patrol.

Are they hiring over there?: No idea. You'd have to ask Anon. But the Borderlands are awfully big for one program to patrol on her own, so probably?

Any other cool details? Despite not being interested in most normal games, Spark's almost always up for a light-jet or an off-grid 'cycle race. And if you're going rock-climbing or doing something else of that nature in the Borderlands and want a partner, she's usually up for that too.

INDEPENDENTS: Hacking, Security Tester/Trainer

[personal profile] tanks4thememory 2014-02-16 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Name:Clu 1.0
Department:Independent, but works with Security on a fairly regular basis.
Work environment:Whenever and wherever. A large part of it is working from home, keeping track of various data strings and comm channels and planning new simulations to test security rookies. He also spends part of his time at the arena, putting said simulations into effect, and part of it out and about, mapping the system and digging up new data. He's also quite willing to put his skills to use for other programs in their residence/business if need be.
What my character can do for you: HACK ALL THE THINGS. Seriously, Clu is a hacker through and through, and that's where his skills lie. Luckily he puts them to good use. Need to make sure your property/files are secure? Clu will test that for you, then point out the weaknesses in your security and help you fix them. He also does this for System Security as a whole, cooking up training sims for the rookies and occasionally running unannounced 'hack attack' drills with them to keep them on their toes. He's also very good at digging up information that may be difficult to come by through strictly legal means if you need that done, though he doesn't advertise that for obvious reasons. He can also do repairs on inanimate code in a pinch, but that's not really his specialty and he generally only uses it for minor things that he runs across (like a flickering streetlight or something) so that it won't get worse and the actual repair programs won't have to be bothered.
Are they hiring over there?: Clu isn't hiring anyone on a permanent basis, but if he needs your help with something, chances are he'll seek you out an try to hire you/drag you along.
Any other cool details? Clu has a constantly-running auto-scan that literally scans everyone and everything he touches with his hands. Most programs can't detect it, unless he focuses on it, and it leaves less of an energy trace than a normal scan. Clu normally wears gloves to dull it/block it, though, since while it's super-useful while working for better code contact, the constant redundant input tends to give him a low-grade headache after awhile under normal conditions. Also, he's well aware that most programs wouldn't appreciate random scans, so... yeah.

INDEPENDENTS: Outfitter

[personal profile] sharp_dressed_gram 2014-02-16 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Name: Cline
Department:Independent shop owner
Work environment: Cline works out of a moderately sized storefront in downtown Tron City. There are large display windows out front showing off some of the merchandise offered within, and a sign in purple lettering above the door reading "Cline's Outfitters". Inside the shop, merchandise is arranged for optimum viewability and ease of access, with a line of six mirrored platforms along the back wall where programs can try on test versions of the various templates and accessories the shop has to offer. There's a long counter along one side wall where exchanges take place and edits are done, a storeroom/breakroom in the back, and a smaller side-room that contains items of a more *ahem* adult nature, that is accessible only upon request and at the staff's discretion. Said staff includes Cline and a total of 12 NPCs, two of them officially named: Mani (female, turquoise cicuits) and Dash (male, light green circuits).
What my character can do for you: 'Sell' you all kinds of stuff. Though clothing templates and accessories are certainly his most popular item and the largest part of his stock, Cline's shop carries a little bit of everything a program might need or want; glassware, decorative items, furniture, civilian-grade batons (come pre-installed with umbrella, basic staff, and basic lightcycle functions, though the last is only accessible with proper permissions; additional functions available upon request), and even blank, writable discs. Though after the incident with Kip he makes a point of mentioning the fact that the discs he offers are blank, and that a program would need to see a recompiler for any necessary firewall upgrades and the like. Cline and his staff can also do edits and repairs to clothing templates you already have, if needed/wanted. They advertise on the network like any good business does, but are quite pleased with word of mouth recommendations as well.
Are they hiring over there?: Cline's not actively looking for anyone at the moment, but if your character has skills that they feel might be helpful or useful in Cline's line of work, they're welcome to stop in and talk to him. If they turn out to be a good fit, he'll probably give them a shot.
Any other cool details? Now stocking the latest in fuzzy sweater templates! XD (Also anyone who wants to toss NPC staff names at me can feel free. Preferably along the theme of clothing lines/brands/other fashion related things that existed in the 80s.)

INDEPENDENTS: User

[personal profile] here_comes_nothing 2014-02-16 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Name: Dr. Walter Gibbs
Department: User/the Free Grid's resident grandpa. XD He'd likely be most closely involved with recompilers and sciencey types, though.
Work environment: Running the Free Grid Orphanage and Program Adoption Agency Wherever his User abilities or grandpa-ing skills are currently needed, though you're most likely to find him around the archives or in the same areas where his program friends work.
What my character can do for you: As a User, the most practical thing Gibbs offers generally is repairs to both programs and inanimate code, involving both standard recompilation and things only a User can provide, such as directive changes or repair of severe glitches. Gibbs can also do various physics hacks and read and manipulate code and energy in ways that programs cannot. He has some aptitude for combat with his User abilities if needed, but his skills in that area are primarily defensive (forcefields and the like) rather than offensive, because offensive User abilities tend to cause collateral damage far too easily, something he strongly wishes to avoid. He can also code things from scratch as necessary, though he tends to limit it to small things, currently; larger, more complex objects would require more time and effort to produce. On less of a practical skills note, he's determined to act as the free Grids resident grandpa and is always available for talks, hugs, or advice-giving.
Are they hiring over there?: Less hiring and more adopting, but yes, he's quite willing to take any program who he feels needs it under his wing. At the current rate this will be half the Grid before long. X3
Any other cool details? Gibbs is best grandpa. End of Line. XD

INDEPENDENTS - Gamer-in-training

[personal profile] isogamer 2014-03-31 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Name: Gadget
Department: Independent - aspiring games champion
Work environment: The park and the outlands, usually. Eventually the Arena.
What my character can do for you: She's a natural climber, and she's got a hoverboard.
Are they hiring over there?: In the unemployment office? Sure!
Any other cool details? She's a peripheral member of the free-running club, as she's more likely to climb things than bounce off of them, and she can fit into small spaces, which is neither here nor there.

Independants: Integration and Updates

[personal profile] lunarwatch 2014-02-17 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
Name: Kip
Department: Kernal Integration Processing, aka "the Office of Updates and Integration Assistance."
Job Title: Boss; Prime Integrator. (does it count as a title if you're the only one there?)
Kip's Personal Schedule: Kip is on-call every moment ready to be summoned by security or medical personnel, or be summoned to a site himself, to assist in emergencies requiring his function. He tries to be in his office from mid-way through the second millicycle, to mid-way through the third. He's an afternoon-and-evening doctor, and often uses the second half-millicycle to make house-calls once normal programs have come off-shift. He then relaxes and does his own things from mid-3rd to mid-1st, and mid-1st to mid-2nd are for sleeping. Eventually, he will adjust to working a more normal day-hours schedule (such as once Eden starts forcing him to sleep/wake at the same time she does.)

Work environment: Kip is the only program working at his office, and as such, he tries to maintain a comfortable and calming atmosphere within the building. This isn't always easy when dealing with stressed-out programs.

Are they hiring?
Yes, selectively. Kip is aware that he is the only KIP unit on the Grid, at least as far as he knows, and if another were to turn up, he may cling to them and weep for a millicycle in relief. One KIP isn't meant to handle the workload he has, but he manages somehow. Barring a fellow KIP, Kip most needs someone able to perform data organisation, and be able to deal with odd hours and stressed patients; an office assistant, if you will. However, anyone considering application for hire would be strictly scrutinized by security before handling the sensitive personal data in the archives.

What my character can do for you: Kip is an auto-updater or Kernel Integration Processor; one of a group-suite of background programs closely linked to both recompilers and guardians, from a modern-day computer system. He's a problem-solver. If your character is newly rezzed, stressed out, or simply in need of someone to talk a problem through, then Kip is naturally programmed to listen and provide guidance and information, much like a User therapist. He also has contacts among the Users and main system utilities, so is able to act as a neutral party/messenger, if a program were in need of a system update, assistance from a higher power, or other such mediation.

Any other details?
Kip's code is descended from the original integrators, the compilation priests who worked alongside guardians in the old I/O towers. It's why he is often mistaken for a guardian in his formal robes.
